I long for the company of those who can sit at the bank of a river and look at the waves for hours. Those who would wonder how it feel to be a wave that travels miles and miles to kiss the shore. Those who can appreciate the journeys and efforts of other creatures. Those who can value devotion, dedication and diligence. I am sure there are some people out there who won’t get bored of flowing rivers, flying birds and colorful flowers even if they get the chance to patiently observe them everyday.

If I come across them, I’ll talk to them about the marvels of nature, the beauty in the simple things, the magnificence in the always busy honey bees, angry wasps and diligent ants.

I’ll tell them how i feel about all these little things that may seem useless to some eyes and will ask them to share their reflections with me.

I want to sit with those who can feel the magic in the leaves that dance in unison with the feeble puffs of the breeze. I want to know how others feel when they watch a train slowly leaving a station on a beautiful evening. I strongly believe that everyone carries a big treasure of unique feelings and stories in their heart. I already shared some of my feelings with you and I am ready to lend my ears to all those who want to share theirs.

Impulsive Sin

On a mid-February afternoon

I sat beside the Bangpakong

as it flowed in style

like a model on the ramp

The breeze was nice and cool

But towards which direction the river flowed?

That was hard to tell

I was trying to figure that out

While my eyes caught a yellow flower

that wind brought near my feet

It was dry but still bright

With its cheek on the warm concrete

i looked up towards the sky

The moon was there

dull yet visible

Like a half bitten cookie

Yet beautiful

And then the wind got rebellious

As it caressed my face and ruffled my hair

I didn’t mind that excesses though

But with the next swirl

It tore apart that little yellow flower

And blew its petals in the air

Hither thither

A beauty reduced to pieces

And bright yellow dust

It made me sad – not only for the flower

and I knew I can’t but I wished I could ask the wind

What did you do to the flower?

Why did you do that to the flower?

The traffic starts diminishing as i start walking away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Gradually shops and homes start looking less lavish and i see more children playing in the streets.

Then the mesh of roads and streets vanishes and i find myself walking beside the weather beaten rail-track that reminds me of the British rule in the subcontinent. This track was laid by the British to connect far flung parts of “The Golden Sparrow” to ensure constant supply of food in the times of peace and the soldiers to fight for the crown in the times of war.

The decades old track swirls around the rocks and hills – bridges upon the chasms and tunnels through the mountains where the options to route it through an alternate path are limited or don’t exist altogether.

I try to walk upon this track like an acrobat with my arms wide open and my legs trying to balance my wait on the narrow carbon steel until the track takes me to the other side of a small river and from here i take a right turn to loose myself in the wilderness.

The yellow blossoms on the acacias, the white blooms on the shrubs and wild flowers welcome me here.

The wild red berries have started to ripen – i collect some of the fruit and fill it in my side pockets to eat them after giving them a cold water wash at the nearby stream. As i move ahead i see a proud dandelion – with its bright yellow petals – all set to say hello in an awesome demeanor. A worthwhile prize for anyone who leaves back a soft couch or a bed to visit him in the wild.

I go near him and bow my head down to pay homage to the little beauty. I am glad that the meeting with him was so deep that i didn’t even think of taking his picture. I was lost in his charms.

After that encounter I walk forth and come across some more plants and flowers that are still nameless in the book of my vocabulary. Still, i feel a connection with them. Being unfamiliar with their worldly names don’t disconnect me from them. For somehow i have got a connection with all the particles and atoms of this universe.

As bedil says,

na ba sahra sarey daaram, na ba gulzaar sodaye

be her ja mee ravam, az khesh me balid tamashaye

Neither i seek the solitude of deserts nor i am greedy for the colors of the world – however when i go to wilderness or visit a garden i see my reflection in the things that comprise that place.

I come across the doves which make a whistling sound when they suddenly flap their wings against their bodies to fly away. Every now and then they do so to perch upon another tree which appears relatively safer to them. The little bees are busy in collecting nectar and the beautiful butterflies are kind to the visitors for letting them look at their colorful wings from as near as any one can get to them.

These are a few things that i see and there are many things that i think about and feel while across this stretch of land. Sometimes when i get heavy with the loads of thoughts, i want to be a buffalo with a calm mind, walking behind the others of my kind with very few things to worry or care about.

I’ll conclude with a verse where Rumi writes a beautiful wish in one of his ghazals:

dar do chashme man nasheen – Ae Aan ke az man mantari

Come and stay in my eyes – You! who are more me than myself

Nature soothes and cures me. I feel myself ready to visit any place where i can have a profound conversation with the nature. As for some of us nature is the remedy for all our pains and problems.

Sunset and sunrise are two marvelous exhibits of nature that recur after every twenty four hours. Light fills the earth with power and then it vanishes to give it time for rest. To watch these amazing events, reminds us to be like the sun that burns itself to render life and light to the earth. It also tells us that great success cannot be achieved without enduring pain.

In the beginning of Masnavi, Rumi explores the essential connection between pain and art. He draws our attention towards the flute and presents a case that the tunes emanating from the flute catch our heart because they carry the grief and yearning  of the wooden stick that was turned into a flute.

A part of a tree is separated and put under the mercy of sharp tools that make it hollow and carve holes into it to give it a form that is known to us as a musical instrument. When an artist blows air into it and moves his fingers on its holes, the separation from its source, the stress and mutilation that it has endured and the elegance that it has achieved by going through all these hardships resonates in the form of a melody.

The key is to endure with elegance.

Courage to face the changing winds and reading the signs of the time helps us in understanding the dance of love. We start seeing that universe is intoxicated with the wine of love and once we free ourselves from unnecessary burdens, all that is left in us is love and kindness.

A dog yawning in front of a worn out gate – a sparrow pecking on the window pane – a squirrel climbing the bark of a tree – a colorful kingfisher sitting on the transmission wires – an old cobbler opening his small roadside shop – a fat barber smoking a cigarette in the cold sunlight of early January mornings – a motorbike rider carelessly cruising besides the little schoolboy at alarming speed, missing his body by a few centimeters in attempt to overtake a car; these were the few glimpses which i can recall from my today’s one kilometer walk to the office.

And now when the day has almost ended as the sun has arched along the sky to disappear in the western horizon. I am sitting in a comfortable chair with my head resting on the edge of its back – i close my eyes for a moment to think that how all those creatures which caught my attention at the morning would have had spent their day today. I don’t know whether that little boy has thought about that careless rider again while sitting in his classroom or not. Maybe he will be a little scared of walking to his school tomorrow.

The life never stops – there are always so many things going on around us. We should remember that by showing a little care and compassion for our fellow beings can save them from getting in to trouble. Moreover if we keep observing little things and happenings around us, we can learn many important lessons of life from them.

So live with your eyes open – play your role in ensuring a safe and peaceful environment for all and keep learning the art of life.

Today; almost every corner of the planet is home to someone. Wherever you go to live – most probably you’ll see that you have got some neighbors. It is an interesting aspect of neighborhood that there can be various types of neighbors which may leave a unique impression on our thoughts and life.

Each of us has got their unique experiences with our neighbors however today i would like to mention some neighbors who mostly go unnoticed. In fact they prefer to stay unnoticed.

A few days ago i noticed an openly declared gang war between the squirrels and doves in my neighborhood. It might seem crazy but watching them act like “Tom and Jerry” episodes, keeps me amused these days and helps me relax from worldly burdens.

While observing there playful attacks i have noticed that they are much sophisticated warriors as compared to some humans who don’t even hesitate to blow their enemies into pieces. They only poke each other in the daylight. Nobody gets hurt as both parties are well equipped to counter each other. If the squirrels are agile and clever – naive doves have got wings and sharp beaks. Though squirrels are always on attack – doves beautifully defend their homes against the gorilla attacks of the rodents. I don’t know whether they will ever sign a peace pact between each other or not – their cute skirmishes will keep me entertaining until i live here.

There are a lot of plants, weeds, birds, animals and of course the people who are our neighbors but they go unnoticed because we don’t have the time to look around and interact with them. Its true that modern lifestyle has made us self centered  and our major source of information and entertainment are the social, print and electronic media but i would implore you all to come out and feel the real world around you.

What do you think about going out for fresh air tomorrow morning? There will be a lot of cute birds sitting on the trees, lamp posts and power cables – waiting to be seen – ready to flutter their beautiful wings and sing for you.

swings.jpg

Swing is my favorite pendulum. In fact i knew the swing much before i came to know what a pendulum is.

Today I yearn to sit on a swing. I want to feel the air on my face as it takes me back and forth.

A swing that can go higher and higher as i start pushing it back with my feet and then with the motion of my body once its fast enough that touching the ground may impede its flow.

It would be better if its ropes come down from the branch of a tall tree. I’ll try to feel its leaves on my face when it will go backward and I’ll feel myself rising against the buildings when it will rise in the front.

I wonder what will be going through my mind if I am riding a gigantic swing on a beautiful cloudy evening. I can only guess that I’ll be experiencing a euphoria. Probably I’ll be thinking about the things that fail to make sense. I’ll be recalling the thousands of lotuses that grow in the wetlands around the rivers. I’ll be thinking of the journey of elegant geese and swans that fly to the warm lands once temperatures start falling below the freezing point in Siberia. I’ll be thinking of the Monarch butterflies that cross the ocean to inaugurate the “Festival of the Dead” in Mexico and what not.

My swing will have a limit for sure but my imagination will swing beyond the limits.

forestas.jpg

The forests implore

with frightened eyes

Save us! before we vanish

Wake up! or we’ll die

The ornaments of mother earth – they adorn the milieu with green

The mighty lungs of nature – they keep the air clean

The damsels that wink at the pacing clouds – to make them wash our cities

The beautiful forests – they are home to numerous species

They kept serving us eagerly

We kept them under the knife

And now their heart is sinking

As we kept attacking their life

They urge our mercy – They need our attention

They cared us for ages – They truly deserve redemption

O dear humans! Love your forests

O dear humans! Save them today

Help them grow – help them nurture

Manage them well and preserve the future
