Balance

There is some sort of balance in the apparently disturbed and chaotic world around us. The more one starts to understand it, life becomes easier and peaceful. I won’t go in to the details of the creation of humans as this topic is subjective to one’s beliefs however observing the way mankind has lived in this world reveals that we are programmed in a certain way. We get bored – we yearn for change. We want more – even if we have enough. We get jealous, we want to be known and respected by others and interestingly most of our natural inclinations are negatives. When we try to find a balance between these desires and the options and ways that are beneficial for us as well as others – we are considered as a good human being and others don’t feel threatened by our actions. When we become stronger than our inner self and overcome all the negativeness to an extent where we are happy to cull our desires and choose those options and ways that are more beneficial to others – we become a saint and people truly respect us for what we have achieved.

Note: The tussle between a person and the desires that keep bubbling in its heart keeps going on until the last breath. On any given day you can be the best of the bests or worst of the worsts. Watch out for it:)

At least, try to seek balance.

Living and traveling through South of Punjab weaved a story of love, life and loss around my heart. For a person familiar with cold weathers of north, the winters are quite kind here. Apart from indigenous population living here for thousands of years a  large number of dwellers are the descendants of  migrants from Iran, Afghanistan and Rajhistan. The reason of this diversity is lack of stability and a lot of invasions in this region. You’ll find a lot of ethnicities here.  Cities of Multan, Dera Ghazi Khan, Bahwalpur and Rahimyarkhan and there surroundings are evolving with the passage of time however the majority of this region is under developed. The land is blessed with numerous mango orchids that grow the sweetest fruit.

Major crops are sugar-cane and wheat however rice, cotton, vegetables and other miscellaneous crops are also extensively cultivated.

In the months of December and January you can see some specific arrangements in the sugar-cane fields where a pit is dug in the ground, fire is made and a big metallic vessel is fixed on it to cook the fresh sugar-cane juice in it. The juice is cooked until it starts getting thick – then it is filtered out of the vessel. The cooked juice dries in to a sweet solid called “Gur”. Local people also like to eat the hot cooked juice called “kukow” with Tandoori bread or Paratha. I was lucky to find one such “Kukow” spot and enjoyed this yummy treat with bread on a roadside restaurant. Such restaurants are commonly termed as “Driver Hotel” and they are quite common all over the South Punjab. Food is tasty and affordable on such food spots. If you are not sure what to order at a “Driver Hotel”, simply go for “Daal Maash” – and rest assured; you’ll never regret it.

Sarayiki is the sweetest language spoken in this area.  If you don’t understand Sarayiki then it will be difficult for you to judge whether someone is talking normally or calling names – facial expressions can help though.

Every morning a sufi chants “Kia haal sunaawan dil da” from the banks of river Indus in Chachran and each and every particle of “Rohi” reverberates the universal desire of seekers until the sun sets in the west.

Soul and body are two aspects of life.

True contentment comes  when the conflict between soul and body is settled. The conflict will not end because that lies in nature of human beings so at least we can seek a resolution that would help us to achieve harmony.

Sufism is a faction that seeks the unison of soul and body through mystic rituals. The practices of devotion, acceptance and love for all make this faction so beautiful. If you ever get a chance to meet a true Sufi, you’ll understand the true meaning of peace.

And above all, there are as many paths leading to Peace as many as there are souls that exist. You have to find yours.
